Ronny Vandyke knows his impact goes beyond the football field at Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech linebacker Ronny Vandyke has overcome injuries to set himself up with an opportunity to start in 2015. But no matter his role, Vandyke is ready and willing to contribute any way he can, so long as it's helping the Hokies win.
That's what he told ESPN's Andrea Adelson in a one-on-one interview. While Vandyke, a fifth-year senior, is intent on leading his Hokies to victory on the field, he's also focused on improving his teammates' lives off the field.
"I know I’m here to play football, but I’ve been able to have a better understanding it’s not only football why I’m here, it’s to make an impact on my teammates’ lives spiritually," Vandyke told ESPN, citing the biggest lesson he's learned during his time at Tech. "I know I’m not going to be able to play football for the rest of my life and I do want to leave something far greater than being an athlete and that’s being a man of God."
After an up-and-down 2014 season, which included a win against Ohio State and a loss against Wake Forest, Virginia Tech must aim for more consistent performances this fall. Having a stalwart leader like Vandyke on the defensive side of the ball should go a long way toward accomplishing this goal.
