Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer has refuted a report that he turned in the University of Florida for a secondary recruiting violation, according to The Columbus Dispatch.
“It is absolutely not true that I turned in the University of Florida,” Meyer, who coached at Florida from 2005-2010, told The Dispatch.
A post on the Outkick the Coverage blog from early Wednesday alleged Meyer reported a “bump” violation – illegal contact between a coach and a recruit – involving Florida assistant coach Brian White and recruit Curtis Samuel. White, who was hired by Meyer during his tenure with the Gators, remains on the coaching staff under new head coach Will Muschamp.
The Ohio State spokesman told the Dispatch that someone in the school’s compliance office notified the Big Ten office about a possible violation after reading about the issue on a recruiting blog. That spokesman claims Meyer wasn’t involved in the process.
White was found to have committed no infraction, though Outkick the Coverage notes that the incident might have had other repercussions for Florida:
“While no wrongdoing was uncovered based on White's alleged violation, the top recruit that both Ohio State and Florida were pursuing recently announced his final five choices: Alabama, Notre Dame, Miami, Rutgers and Ohio State. No Florida.”
Meanwhile, The Gainesville Sun reports Ohio State also turned in Florida last year for another alleged recruiting violation involving defensive end Jordan Sherit, who did sign to play for the Gators.
