Report: Freshman Washington breaks leg, injuries mounting at receiver for Gamecocks

Published Aug. 31, 2015 9:26 a.m. ET

South Carolina suffered a bit of bad injury news when it comes to its receiver corps.

The Gamecocks will be without receivers Shaq Davidson and Jerad Washington for the entire season, per a report from Josh Kendall of The State. Davidson will have surgeries on both knees in the upcoming weeks. The redshirt freshman out of Gaffney tore a knee ligament in practice.

"[Davidson] needs a whole year to get his knees ready to play next year," said head coach Steve Spurrier. "He'll have his second redshirt year this year."

Washington was projected as a contributor in 2015. However, the true freshman suffered a broken leg during Sunday night's practice session.

These two injuries will put pressure not only on new signal-caller Connor Mitch, but also on the rest of the receivers group. With Pharoh Cooper expected to garner considerable attention from opposing teams, fellow projected starters Carlton Heard and Deebo Samuel will likely need to step up and produce for the Gamecocks.
