Report: Brett Hundley 'reps' met with Roc Nation Sports
LOS ANGELES -- UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley came into this season making no mention of whether or not it would be his last in Westwood. The redshirt sophomore will be draft eligible after this season and he's been considered a potential first-round pick based on his dual-threat talents and high football IQ.
Two poor performances against Stanford and Oregon had some detractors saying he needs more seasoning but a report that surfaced Wednesday morning suggested Hundley may be preparing for the draft already.
Jason Cole of the National Football Post reported that Hundley's "representatives" met with Roc Nation Sports recently, to discuss the possibility of rapper/mogul Jay-Z representing Hundley as his agent in April's NFL Draft.
Jay-Z and his agency, Roc Nation, currently boast only a small stable of talent, but all are highly marketable, high-profile athletes. New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano leads that group and in the NFL, New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith and New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz are all represented by the rapper. His one female athlete is the WNBA's Skylar Diggins.
Neither Hundley nor Jim Mora were made available for comment Wednesday, but the Orange County Register was able to reach Hundley's father, Brett Sr., and he denied the meeting ever took place.
While meeting with agents, especially in the middle of the season, is a tricky gray area, it can be navigated. An athlete, or in this case his family, can meet with agencies to test the waters so long as benefits are not exchanged and no contract is signed. Student-athletes with remaining eligibility are encouraged to keep in close contact with the school's compliance department in order to make sure everything is, in fact, legal.
Basically, if Hundley, or anyone associated with him, did meet with a sports agency, as long as Jay-Z didn't foot the bill -- and that includes rides to and from the meeting place -- no wrongdoing was done.
But the Hundley family is maintaining a united front, saying the report is "misinformation."
Hundley is 14-7 since being the named the starter last season and has been the most successful UCLA quarterback in recent history. But he has displayed some immature tendencies at times, most notably a reluctance to give up the ball and a questionable ability to read tough defenses.
Hundley and the Bruins will attempt to shake their slump Saturday at the Rose Bowl against Colorado at 4:30 p.m., on FOX Sports 1.
