Report: ACC accepts Syracuse, Pitt
The Atlantic Coast Conference Saturday approved applications from Big East schools Syracuse and Pittsburgh, an ACC official told USA Today.
An announcement regarding the move could come as early as Sunday morning via an ACC teleconference.
The schools' applications to become the 13th and 14th members of the ACC needed to be approved by nine of the conference's 12 presidents, and the official said that had been achieved. He spoke on the condition of anonymity because the announcement had not yet been made.
The news comes on the same day it was announced that the founder of the Big East, Basketball Hall of Famer Dave Gavitt, had died aged 73 after a long illness.
Gavitt, the former Providence College coach, died Friday night surrounded by family in his home in Rumford, R.I.
There have been signs of a major shift in the landscape of college sports in recent weeks. The Board of Regents at the University of Texas will meet Monday to discuss alignment issues in the light of apparent future moves from the University of Oklahoma and Texas A&M away from the Big 12.
UT confirmed the scheduling Friday, a day after Oklahoma officials announced realignment would also be on their agenda at a regularly-scheduled regents meeting Monday.
While the aim of UT officials was to preserve the Big 12, they will also consider potential moves to the Pac-12 or the ACC as well as potentially adopting independent status, the Austin American-Statesman reported.
Florida State, meanwhile, was forming an exploratory committee to evaluate its future conference options, according to the Palm Beach Post.
