OU's Jordan Evans Named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

It’s a great week any time an Oklahoma player receives Big 12 performance honors, but it’s even more special this season when a Sooner defensive player is so honored. And that is the case for OU linebacker Jordan Evans, who had a career game in Oklahoma’s win over Baylor on Saturday.

Evans had two interceptions, two quarterback sacks and two pass breakups in Oklahoma’s 45-24 win over Baylor, and on Monday was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week.

His two interceptions and two sacks is a first by an OU player in school history and the first time it has been done by a player from an FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) school since the 2012 season.

The senior Oklahoma linebacker also had a team-high nine tackles in the Baylor game. He came into the game on Saturday with just two career interceptions. His first pick in the game on Saturday came on the Sooner two-yard line as Baylor was driving for a score. OU took over possession after that and mounted a 91-yard TD drive that put the Sooners up 21-0.

Evans’ second interception of the game came in the third quarter. He returned the pick 23 yards before being taken down just short of the goal line. The Sooners scored on the next play.

Two games ago, against Kansas, Evan returned an interception 33 yards for a score.

Evans now has three interceptions in 2016 and leads the Sooners with 76 tackles.

Evans joins wide receiver Dede Westbrook and placekicker Austin Seibert as the only Oklahoma players to be named a Big 12 Player of the Week this season. In addition, the Sooner linebacker, along with former OU defensive star Eric Striker, are the only two Oklahoma defensive players to win the weekly conference award since 2008.
