OU finds its QB and better yet the re-emergence of their star WR
The Oklahoma Sooners might have found their quarterback in Baker Mayfield, but their bigger elation has to be the return of star wide receiver Sterling Shepard to prominence.
Shepard's seventh catch and tight-rope walk into the end zone in double overtime gave the No. 19 Oklahoma Sooners an improbable 31-24 victory over No. 23 Tennessee on Saturday night after falling behind 17-0.
Shepard missed major chunks of last season with a nagging injury, a significant shortcoming in a Sooners offense that was disbanded by coach Bob Stoops at the end of the season when he fired most of his offensive staff including the offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach.
In came the return of the spread offense with new offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley and Mayfield, the one-time Texas Tech walk-on starter, at the controls.
Shepard finished Saturday night's game with seven receptions for 74 yards and two touchdowns.
