Ole Miss QB Mackey pleads not guilty
Ole Miss quarterback Randall Mackey has pleaded not guilty to charges of disorderly conduct in connection with a fight last month at a Mississippi bar, The Clarion-Ledger reported Thursday.
Mackey was arrested Aug. 23 after an incident at The Lyric bar, near the university's Oxford campus, in which he is accused of striking a police officer in the lip.
According to the report, police did not believe Mackey struck the cop intentionally, hence the disorderly conduct charge instead of a more serious one. Court records show Mackey's trial is set for Nov. 9.
Mackey was suspended for the Rebels' season-opening loss against BYU but returned Saturday as the backup to Zack Stoudt. Mackey played in the second half of the 42-24 win over Southern Illinois, leading two touchdown drives.
Mackey's arrest was the second incident involving an Ole Miss football player in four days. Tight end Jamal Mosley was arrested in Oxford the weekend prior on charges of public intoxication, but that charge was dropped Wednesday, according to the report.
Ole Miss (1-1) opens SEC play Saturday at Vanderbilt (2-0).
