Oklahoma State Football Recruiting: Why landing Cowboy back Nic McTear matters

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 2:34 p.m. ET

The Oklahoma State football program landed a solid commitment from Heritage tight end Nic McTear to add to the 2018 recruiting class.

OK State now has three players committed in the 2018 class. The prized commit is the four-star quarterback from Denton, TX, Spencer Sanders. The other commit is three-star inside linebacker from Rockwall, TX, Blake Barron.

McTear has good size at 6’4″, 220-pounds. He also held offers from the Texas Longhorns, Iowa State Cyclones, and Colorado State Rams. McTear held six offers altogether. He committed to OK State on Feb. 6.

He fits into the Cowboy scheme well as a Cowboy back or a receiving tight end. The aggressiveness McTear offers combined with his size that he knows how to use in the passing game offers the OK State offense great value. Yet, McTear lacks in the speed department, but that is not a major requirement for the position he’ll be playing at OK State. And he still has one more year to develop and impress scouts before he graduates high school and makes his way to Stillwater.

It’s an interesting time to pay attention to the recruiting trail for the Pokes. The 2017 Spring Game is fast approaching and that’s a great time to land more commits ahead of the 2017 regular season and fall camp.

McTear could be just the first player to commit over what will hopefully be a good two-month span on the recruiting trail for Gundy and the Pokes. But for now, McTear is a solid addition to the 2018 recruiting class. You can view the entire 2018 recruiting class on 247Sports here.
