Fresh off of a national championship win, Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer has signed a new contract that will keep him in Columbus for a long time. Ohio State has announced the new deal for Meyer, which will take him through the 2020 season and bumps his pay up.
Meyer's new contract averages at least $6.5 million per year.
Ohio State Director of Athletics Gene Smith had plenty of praise for the head coach after the extension was announced.
“Urban Meyer has done an excellent job strengthening our culture of commitment to academics, career development and winning championships,” Smith said. “Our young men continue to thrive under his leadership, whether on the playing field where they are national champions, through life skills pursuits like Real Life Wednesdays, internships and job fairs, and academically through program-wide efforts to monitor the progress of every student-athlete which has helped the team achieve its highest graduation success rate at 78 percent.
“Additionally, he continues to develop his coaches and attract talented leaders when needed.”
According to a chart maintained by USA Today, the new contract will make Meyer the second-highest paid head coach in college football, just behind Alabama’s Nick Saban. Meyer had previously ranked sixth on that list.
