NC State brings in 24-man recruiting class

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) North Carolina State started winning more often on fall Saturdays and now the Wolfpack feels like it won on Signing Day, too.

Coach Dave Doeren announced a 24-player recruiting class Wednesday.

The Wolfpack bounced back from a 3-9 finish in Doeren's first year and went 8-5 last year with a Bitcoin Bowl victory over Central Florida.

''We weren't able to talk about winning here until now,'' Doeren said, adding, ''it's nice to talk like that but it's even better to show it.''

He says seven of those recruits had committed elsewhere but signed with N.C. State.

Of the 16 instate players signed by the Wolfpack, four made the Associated Press all-state team. They're led by offensive tackle Emanuel McGirt Jr. of Durham and defensive end Darian Roseboro of Lincolnton.

Doeren said having that many players from the state is ''something I take a lot of pride in.

''I felt there were too many great players leaving the state, and it was our goal, our mission, to keep the best players at home,'' he added.

McGirt had previously committed to rival North Carolina before Doeren said he ''got him to come to his senses.'' The coach said he flipped defensive end Tyrone Riley, who had been headed for Kentucky before choosing N.C. State last week, and said offensive tackle Aaron Wiltz had been committed to Central Florida.

And running back Johnny Frasier of Princeton decided to turn down Florida State in favor of the Wolfpack.

Doeren said part of the sales pitch to instate players considering heading elsewhere is that ''you're not going to be a local hero (outside the state), you're just going to be the guy down there playing.''
