North Carolina Central has hired South Alabama assistant Jerry Mack as its football coach.

N.C. Central announced the hiring Thursday night. His five-year contract begins Jan. 6 and is worth $180,000 per year.

The 33-year-old Mack is the third-youngest head coach in Division I and the second-youngest in the FCS. He spent the past two seasons coaching receivers at South Alabama and was on Memphis' staff before that.

He's the permanent replacement for Henry Frazier III, who was fired nine days before a season-opening loss at Duke and after his second arrest in 16 months.
