Movin' On Up
Doug Webster, Kansas Wesleyan football: The former Leigh and West Valley College quarterback had another huge game for the Coyotes, who lost a 56-42 shootout to McPherson on Saturday. In a showdown of two undefeated Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference teams, Webster threw for 358 yards and four touchdowns and added 125 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Through six games, Webster has passed for 1,718 yards and 18 touchdowns with just two interceptions. The senior is also averaging 70 rushing yards per game and has scored five rushing touchdowns. Running the spread offense, Webster has twice been named KCAC athlete of the week and had led the Coyotes to No. 14 in the NAIA rankings before Saturday's loss. Webster was named NAIA athlete of the week in early October after breaking the school record with 411 total yards in a win over Bethany. He shattered that mark with 483 yards Saturday.
Sam Critser, Michigan tennis: The freshman won her section of the Wolverine Invitational Oct. 3 by going 3-0, including a comeback win in the championship match. Playing just her second collegiate tournament, Critser fell behind 4-0 in the first set of the final but recovered to beat teammate Mimi Nguyen 7-6, 7-6 (2). Critser also finished 3-0 in doubles action for the Wolverines, who are expected to compete for an NCAA title this season. A Mountain View High alum, Critser was consistently ranked No. 1 in Northern California in her age group and reached a high of No. 12 nationally when she was 16.
Tayler Davis, Cal tennis: The former Archbishop Mitty star had a strong weekend at the St. Mary's Invitational before losing to teammate Annie Goransson in the title match. The unseeded sophomore is 9-1 on the season and beat the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds en route to the final. Davis and Goransson teamed up to finish second in the doubles draw. Davis was the 2008 CCS player of the year at Mitty.
