Michigan TE Wheatley to miss spring with foot injury

Published Mar. 23, 2018 9:31 p.m. ET

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) Michigan tight end Ty Wheatley is expected to miss the rest of spring football with a foot injury.

Coach Jim Harbaugh said Friday that Wheatley appeared to have a fracture in his foot, but is expected back in the fall for the 2018 season. Wheatley had three catches for 26 yards last year.

The Wolverines had their first spring practice Friday. Harbaugh said the reps are being evenly distributed among the quarterbacks. There is still no word on whether quarterback Shea Patterson, a transfer from Mississippi, will be eligible to play next season.

Michigan doesn't have an official offensive coordinator listed on its staff. Harbaugh said running the offense will be a ''collaborative'' effort and that the play-calling process is still to be decided.
