McElwain: Florida QBs progressing but still need work on '3-pointers'

According to new coach Jim McElwain, Florida's quarterbacks have been making progress in camp on their free throws, layups and 3-pointers.

Wait, what? According to Gator Sports, McElwain used some basketball terminology Thursday to talk about the training camp development of Florida's passing game. He explained that a free throw is a short pass that the defense will concede, a layup is a relatively safe underneath pass, and a 3-pointer is a downfield throw.

"For the most part, we're starting to make some free throws and make some open layups," McElwain told the media. "Probably not great on 3-pointers yet, but right now, at least we're stroking the ball pretty decent.

"We’ve got to be able to connect when a guy’s open deep, and you’ve got to be able to throw the quick game when a guy is open for a layup. We’ve gotten a little bit better there at that.

"We’re getting some guys open. I don’t know if sometimes the receiver’s so shocked the ball’s gotten to him or something (and drops it), but there again, the consistency of what we’ve got to do just to play catch."

McElwain reportedly did not comment on the quarterbacks' performances individually; highly touted redshirt freshman Will Grier is vying with sophomore Treon Harris for the starting job in a competition that is expected to last well into camp. McElwain told the Orlando Sentinel earlier in the week that he is still waiting for one of the two contenders to "take ownership" of the position.
