Mack Brown admits he messed up by not recruiting Baker Mayfield
Baker Mayfield was a walk-on at Texas Tech, so it's not like he was some sort of player everyone knew about.
No one really took a chance on Mayfield out of high school, but former Texas coach Mack Brown admits he made a mistake by not recruiting the player who was just down the road from where the Longhorns play their games.
"I've been criticized enough about quarterbacks," Brown told The Oklahoman. "But this is one that not only I missed, but everybody missed."
Mayfield received just three scholarship offers to FBS teams before walking on for the Red Raiders and being named the Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year. He lost his job at Tech and then walked on once more – this time at Oklahoma.
"All of us made a huge mistake," Brown said to The Oklahoman. "He's just a super player and probably as much for his sporty, his team leadership, his toughness. Just what he brings off the field really enhances his ability to make plays."
