Lots to do this busy weekend in the Bay Area

Beer, Bears football, blue skies and the Blue Angels.

Expect clear and sunny weather this weekend as two professional and two college football games are played, and the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, the U.S. Coast Guard Helicopter and other military demonstrations entertain Bay Area crowds in the skies.

The California Golden Bears face the UCLA Bruins at 12:30 p.m. for the homecoming game at Memorial Stadium. Later in the day, the Stanford Cardinals are at home to play host to the USC Trojans for a 5 p.m. kickoff.

"There's nothing quite like homecoming at a major university and home for us isn't just the campus it's the Bay Area as a whole,'' said UC Berkeley spokesman Dan Mogulof. "And there's nothing quite like going to a game where it's all about the love of the game and community spirit."

Homecoming is the campus's largest annual event and thousands of alumni, parents, and students are expected for alumni reunions, family events, faculty seminars, campus tours and the Bear Affair Barbeque. "It's one big party for 70,000 of our closest friends," Mogulof said.

The following graduating years will be reuniting at Cal this weekend: '50, '55, '60, '65, '70, '75, '80, '85, '90, '95, '00, '05, '09. More information is available at http://homecoming.berkeley.edu/parents .

If you are coming from out of town, visit the Berkeley Convention and Visitors Bureau website at visitberkeley.com for information on hotels, restaurants and transportation. Cal officials are recommending public transportation for the game Saturday as public parking is only available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Charges and hours vary, but on Saturday, expect to pay up to $50 for the day, university officials said.

BART will keep the Bay Area moving Saturday and Sunday with longer trains serving crowds headed to Fleet Week along the Embarcadero in San Francisco. Ridership is expected to be up, with 190,000 people expected to take BART Saturday and 141,000 riders on Sunday, said BART spokesman Jim Allison.

"Our advice is for people to buy round-trip tickets at the beginning of their trip so they don't need to get in line again for the return trip home after Fleet Week or a game," Allison said.

Started in 1981, this annual event brings together U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard forces for a weeklong celebration in the water and skies -- highlighted by a two-day air show this weekend. A parade of ships and air show takes place from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday with the air show continuing from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Team Oracle's, Sean Tucker, who Fleet Week officials call "one of the country's finest civilian aerobatic pilots" will be performing and he'll be joined by the "Collaborators" his son, Eric W. D. Tucker and two other pilots. Returning to Fleet Week for a second year will be Geico's Tim Weber. The Marina Green will have an entertainment area featuring exhibits, interactive displays and great viewing spots. Aquatic Park will also offer good viewing as will Fisherman's Wharf and PIER 39.

On Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers take on the Philadelphia Eagles at a 5:15 p.m. home game while the Oakland Raiders host the San Diego Chargers at 1 p.m.

BART will continue the longer trains Sunday, but if you drive to the games or anywhere in the Bay Area this weekend, AAA Northern California spokesman Matt Skryja has some advice. "Remember to have patience. With all of the activities that are going on, there are likely to be more people on the road, which may impact your trip," he said. Skryja suggests checking out www.aaa.com for information on lodging, dining and construction projects that might impact your trip.

And with a high of 79 degrees expected on Saturday and temperatures possibly reaching 83 degrees on Sunday in the Bay Area, remember the sunscreen, water and a hat, he said.
