The NCAA has ruled that Kansas cornerback Kevin Short is academically ineligible and will have to redshirt this season.

Short, a transfer from Fort Scott Community College, started fall camp late after completing his academic work. He was listed as co-starter but was held out of Kansas' season opening win against South Dakota.

Kansas coach Charlie Weis said Friday that he was ''extremely disappointed'' with the NCAA's decision that because Short had a redshirt year available, he should spend it improving his academics.

Weis said Short's junior college transcript gave no indication that Short would not be a successful student, and his grades and transferable hours exceeded entrance requirements. Short, an NJCAA All-American at Fort Scott, will have two years of eligibility remaining after this season.
