SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock will miss ''the first few weeks of preseason camp'' after having surgery last week.

Coach Brian Kelly announced in a statement Sunday that he would assume Denbrock's duties until his assistant returns.

Kelly says Denbrock is ''doing extremely well,'' but did not give specifics about his medical condition.

Denbrock is beginning his first season as offensive coordinator at Notre Dame after taking over before the Pinstripe Bowl last year when Chuck Martin left to become head coach at Miami, Ohio.

Denbrock says he is ''resting and feeling better every day.''

Notre Dame opens its season Aug. 30 against Rice.
