For the second time this football season, former Howard standout Rico Council of Chattanooga was named Ohio Valley Conference defensive player of the week. Council, a 255-pound linebacker for Tennessee State, had six solo tackles among his career-high 15 total stops in TSU's 19-17 loss at 25th-ranked Southeast Missouri State.

* Former Ooltewah High star Brian Marshall ran 19 times for 85 yards and caught four passes for 35, including a tying 12-yard touchdown reception with 6:19 left in the game, but Tusculum College lost 63-56 to visiting Newberry in South Atlantic Conference football Saturday. Bryan Ehrlich passed for 515 yards and seven touchdowns and scored another TD and Brandon Bostick set a league record with 322 yards on his 11 catches for Newberry (3-2, 2-0). Bo Cordell completed 44 of 70 passes for 431 yards and four TDs and scored twice for the Pioneers (4-2, 0-2). The teams totaled 1,162 yards of offense.

* Fumbling the ball away on its first play in overtime after allowing a field goal, Carson-Newman lost 38-35 in its SAC home game Saturday against Wingate. Carson-Newman (3-3, 1-1) had a 43-yard field-goal attempt blocked as regulation time expired. Nate Inman ran 24 times for 214 yards and three touchdowns for the Eagles.

* Lee University junior Arlene Ferreira from Brazil is the Southern States Athletic Conference volleyball player of the week for the second time in four weeks. She totaled 43 kills and 34 digs as the NAIA's second-ranked Lady Flames improved to 19-0 with two road wins against strong competition. They host Brenau in an SSAC match tonight.

BASEBALL

* Los Angeles Dodgers pitching coach Rick Honeycutt, who starred at Lakeview High School and the University of Tennessee before a long major league pitching career, will head the instruction for the second annual Legends of the Game baseball clinic conducted by the Engel Foundation. With Engel Stadium's roof soon to be under repair, the Oct. 24 clinic will be held at AT&T Field, 1-4:30 p.m. It is free for boys and girls ages 6-18 and will be accompanied by educational sessions on such topics as health and fitness and coaching tips for parents. Companies wishing to join the foundation, the YMCA, Brewer Media, Dizzy Dean Baseball, Healthy Kids Healthy Communities, Chattanooga Parks and Recreation and the Chattanooga Lookouts in supporting the clinic should call Bobby Dunn at 344-6210. * The Chattanooga Cyclones K baseball team went 3-1 and finished third in the Southern Wood Bat World Series this past weekend in Cleveland and Chattanooga. Brent Smith was the winning pitcher and had two hits and three RBIs in a 7-1 defeat of Green Wave, when Will Cooper and Kenzie Goins each had two hits and two RBIs, Cooper with a home run, and T.J Binder and Lee Gibson also had two hits each. Smith had a two-run hit and James Fowlkes and Goins had two hits apiece behind the pitching of Jeff Burke and Trevor Evett in a 4-0 shutout of Memphis Apak, and Gibson, Goins and Cooper had two hits each, Gibson with two RBIs, and Fowlkes smacked a triple in a 7-6 win over the Atlanta Stars. Jarred Porter got that win with relief help from Ryan Johnson. The Cyclones lost 7-6 to Birmingham Baseball despite three runs with two triples among three hits for Fowlkes, three hits and two runs from Binder, three RBIs from Burke and two hits each from him, Drew Toth and Goins. Viper Baseball of Alabama won the tournament.

GOLF

* BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Lee University tied for fourth at 631 for 36 holes in the 17-team Birmingham-Southern Shootout women's golf tournament Sunday and Monday at Highland Park Golf Club. Columbus State won at 601. Lee's Sloane Skinner and Courtney Shelton tied for 15th at 156, and Geandra Almeida was 17th at 157. Kristin Bourg tied for 34th at 163.

* Andy White of Signal Mountain shot a 68 Monday and leads the Mid-Amateur division by a stroke over Nashville's Steve McDonald after the first of two rounds in the TGA Championship series tournament at Signal Mountain Golf & Country Club. Knoxville's Steve Golliher also had a 68 and leads the senior group by four shots.

SOFTBALL

* The Lady Mocs RBI Club will meet tonight at 6:30 in the press box at Jim Frost Stadium to finalize plans for Saturdays' UTC softball intrasquad game and cookout. The public is invited.
