How Art Briles of Baylor Bears, Gary Patterson of TCU Horned Frogs became star coaches

College football analyst Robert Smith says Baylor is the second-best team in the country behind Ohio State.

 At first glance, Baylor's Art Briles and TCU's Gary Patterson seem to be dichotomies of one another. Patterson is a defensive genius; Briles, an offensive guru. Briles quips maxims with a Texas twang; Patterson can easily delve into a rapid soliloquy.

But how did this all come to be? Rewind a decade, and Texas and Oklahoma were the class of the Big 12. Baylor was an afterthought, and TCU wasn't even in the conference.
