University of Houston filed a request Monday with the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibility for record-setting quarterback Case Keenum, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Keenum, a fifth-year senior, suffered a season-ending knee injury in the third game of the season in Sept. Keenum, who will turn 23 in Feb., was granted a medical redshirt in 2006 when he injured his collarbone.

Under NCAA rules in order to receive a sixth year of eligibility, a player must miss two seasons due to circumstances beyond his or her control.

If Keenum is granted a sixth year, he will need 3,486 yards to become the all-time leading passer in NCAA history. He is the second player in Division I history to pass for more than 5,000 yards in back-to-back seasons.
