Georgia Tech's Mason, Smelter go back-to-back in 4th round of NFL draft
In a bit of draft day oddity, the New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers picked interior offensive lineman Shaquille Mason (131st overall) and wide receiver DeAndre Smelter (132nd overall) with consecutive fourth-round picks.
A third Yellow Jacket, wide receiver Darren Waller, was picked two rounds later by the Baltimore Ravens. Both Smelter and Walter are big-bodied receivers who managed to stand out in Georgia Tech's run-heavy offense, combining for over 1,000 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Aside from the Yellow Jackets' trio of draft picks, four unselected Georgia Tech products were signed after the fact. Running back Synjyn Days was picked up by the Dallas Cowboys, safety Isaiah Johnson by the Detroit Lions, running back Zach Laskey by the St. Louis Rams and linebacker Quayshawn Nealy by the Seattle Seahawks.
