Every SEC fan knows all about Georgia's dynamic sophomore running back Nick Chubb but it was actually Sony Michel that came to Athens that came in as the prized running back of the 2014 recruiting class.

Following an injury plagued freshman campaign, Michel has come into this season with an attitude to prove the Dawgs have more than one option at running back. The work has paid off, as his team has seen his noticeably improvement.

“He can do a bunch of different things,” lineman John Theus told the Athens Banner Herald. “He can catch the ball, good in space, can run the ball and hit the hole. He’s just a great athlete.”

“It’s hard to find a guy who can flex out but also run powers and dives,” sophomore cornerback Malkom Parrish said. “He’s a rare breed and blessed with skills.”

“Yeah, (he’s) a special player, Richt said. “It is a challenge to get him in as many situations as possible to use his abilities.”

When Michel sees the field, his stated goal is to make big plays.

“I mean once I’m out there on the field, my whole mindset just becomes making a big play or scoring a touchdown,” Michel said.

So far so good, as Michel is averaging just under 10 yards per touch in his 22 touches from scrimmage and has scored two touchdowns after the first two games. Expect South Carolina to get a heavy dose of Chubb this weekend followed the explosive Michel to finish them off.

Richt went so far as to compare his freshman back to an All-American his team will face this weekend.

“He’s a guy like Pharoh Cooper, got a lot of skills,” Richt said. “You have to figure out how to use this guy and make him more effective.”
