FSU Football coach Jimbo Fisher signed a contract extension through 2024. We discuss the top three reasons the extension helps FSU football.

The news should have come as no surprise since FSU President John Thrasher indicated they would be “tweaking” Jimbo Fisher’s contract in late November once it was apparent he was not LSU bound.

Personally, I like the deal. The expectation is that Fisher will continue to be in the hunt for ACC and National Championships. Those were the expectations prior to the extension, so nothing has changed on that end.

However, the extension does change some important factors moving forward that have been an issue for FSU football. Let’s look at the top 3 reasons the extension helps FSU.

Stability

The rumors have been running rampant over the better part of two seasons. LSU wanted Jimbo Fisher to be their head coach last season when they were going to fire Les Miles.

They kept Miles, but fired him two games into this season and the rumors began immediately.

The general perception was Fisher would leave for the “SEC” job where the used to be offensive coordinator, despite Fisher openly saying he liked and wanted to be at FSU.

The fact that Fisher has turned LSU down twice over the last two years certainly showed that he preferred to be in Tallahassee. Fisher did receive a raise courtesy of the LSU overtures, but that’s smart business on behalf of his agent.

The extension signifies that Fisher will be at FSU for the long haul which will discourage other suitors from pursuing him.

Recruiting

“You know Jimbo is looking to leave FSU right?” That’s a statement potential recruits heard time and time again over the last two recruiting cycles.

I don’t know if anything will turn off a recruit and his parents quicker than a coach recruiting him with rumors of him interested in coaching elsewhere.

Jimbo Fisher is an ace recruiter, and one of the best closers in the game. FSU has the No. 12 recruiting class nationally and No. 2 in the ACC.

However, they are in the mix for several blue chip players. The fact that Fisher has signed this extension should put these recruits at ease regarding Fisher being at FSU throughout their FSU career should they commit to the ‘Noles.

Assistants Potentially Getting More Money

It’s great when the head coach gets a raise and extension, but it’s even more important when elite programs can attract, hire and keep excellent assistants on staff.

Jimbo Fisher’s buyout is tied to his assistants salaries. The assumption is FSU will pay Fisher’s assistants more which would raise the buyout that Fisher would have to pay should he decide to leave FSU before his contract is up.

This accomplishes two things:

The assumption is Fisher will continue to win at an elite level over the next 7-8 years. There’s no reason to think he will not based on what we’ve seen the first seven.

    Conclusion

There’s a reason why his name continued to come up when top schools had coaching vacancies.

    Enjoy it FSU football fans!
