Despite interim label, staff feverishly recruiting for South Carolina

Although there's no guarantee the current staff will be back in Columbia next year, it isn't stopping them from building for the future.

Led by interim head coach Shawn Elliott, the stable of coaches went out and recruited last week during the bye period. The staff was scattered throughout at various high school games, and have been making a concerted effort to sell the program.

"The same message we've always got. South Carolina is a great place, it has got a lot to offer," said offensive coordinator G.A. Mangus. "We've got great facilities, facilities just like everybody else has got. We're going to go out and do the same things we've done."

The Gamecocks currently have 16 public commitments. The headliners include Pennsylvania signal-caller Brandon McIlwain, South Carolina receiver Bryan Edwards, and New Jersey receiver Kelvin Harmon.

While some may see this position as an unenviable one, Elliott is keeping a positive outlook on things.

"We've got to go out and sell the stability of our football program right now," said Elliott. "Some people say there is no stability. But we've got a good staff. We've come together, worked well the last two weeks. The University of South Carolina does not have to be sold. It is a place with an unbelievable fan base. I think everybody knows what the University of South Carolina is about."
