Delaware State has fired football coach Al Lavan after the Hornets finished the season with a 3-8 record.

Athletics director Derek Carter said Thursday it was time for a change after three consecutive losing seasons.

Defensive coordinator Rayford Petty has been appointed interim head coach while the school conducts a national search for Lavan's replacement.

Lavan was 41-36 in seven seasons at Delaware State. In 2007, he led the Hornets to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship and their first NCAA playoff appearance.
