Kenny Cook had two touchdowns and 113 yards receiving as Gardner-Webb beat Furman 28-21 in the season opener for both teams.

Cook's diving 5-yard touchdown catch early in the fourth quarter gave Gardner-Webb its only lead of the game and turned out to be the winning score.

Gardner-Webb trailed by 14 in the third quarter but two short touchdown runs by Juanne Blount cut Furman's lead to 21-20. Blount's latter score was set up by an interception by Ivan Toomer. Blount finished with 158 yards rushing.

Lucas Beatty also had a big day for Gardner-Webb with the two touchdown passes and 276 yards. His 49-yard pass to Cook in the third helped set up Blount's first touchdown.
