Colorado-Oregon pay tribute to shooting victims before game
BOULDER, Colo. (AP) There was a moment of silence before the Oregon-Colorado football game Saturday night at Folsom Field for the people who died in the shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon.
The Oregon Ducks added a special helmets emblem to honor the victims, and Oregon State will, too.
Nine people were killed by a gunman on the college campus in Southern Oregon, about 70 miles from Eugene. The worst mass shooting in Oregon history also injured several others at the community college. The gunman died following a shootout with police.
The Ducks coordinated the helmet stickers with Oregon State, which was off the week.
The Linfield Wildcats, a Division III team in Oregon which is ranked No. 3 nationally, affixed similar stickers to their helmets for Saturday's game against Lewis and Clark.
Major League Soccer's Portland Timbers held a moment of silence before their match against Sporting Kansas City at Providence Park. The Timbers Army supporters' group hung a banner with the black ribbon symbol and the letters UCC.
Fans also displayed a heart-shaped banner about the players' field interest that simply said ''Roseburg'' with the image of a single rose.
On Friday, the Seattle Mariners held a moment of silence with the names of the nine victims shown on the video scoreboard at Safeco Field.
