College Football Weekly News Bites: Spring edition
Spring has arrived and here are the latest college football news bites from around the country.
Spring has arrived in Atlanta. I'm not very happy about it as spring here means sickly clouds of yellow pollen that blanket every available surface and turn its residents into red-eyed, wheezing piles of misery. Otherwise, the world of college football is quietly prepping for fall.
Myron Rolle is the intellectual equivalent of Andre the Giant. Myron Rolle, a former safety at Florida State University, has just been awarded a medical residency at Harvard and Massachusetts General. Rolle was a great football player, but his academics outshine his athletic records. While studying at FSU, Rolle was granted a Rhodes scholarship to study medical anthropology at Oxford University. Congratulations to Rolle on a well-deserved honor.
What the heck is going on at Baylor? Baylor fired their new associate director for football operations, DeMarkco Butler. Apparently, Butler sent creepy text messages to a teenager. In February, assistant strength coach Brandon Washington was fired after he was arrested in a prostitution sting.
I really wonder how the jobs postings read on the Baylor website. "Hey–are you a smarmy pervert? Do you like football? We can combine your two interests. Come work for us at Baylor!" Granted, Baylor fired the offending employees immediately after learning about the allegations, but you'd think with all of their recent issues they would learn to vet these people a bit better.
Clemson has some weird traditions. Look, I like Clemson. I really do. But that doesn't change the fact that they have a bizarro tombstone tradition to celebrate their victories. Clemson has a graveyard of tombstones carved with their victories over ranked teams. For the 2016 season, they put in a tombstone for their wins over 12th-ranked Florida State, 23rd-ranked Virginia Tech in the ACC Championship, No. 3 Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl, and of course, for their win over top-seeded Alabama. Seems a bit of a morbid way to celebrate a national title, but who am I to judge?
