Charlotte beats Campbell 52-7 in inaugural game

Charlotte's football debut couldn't have gone much better Saturday as the 49ers defeated the Campbell Camels 52-7 in their inaugural game before a standing-room only crowd of 16,630 at the new Jerry Richardson Stadium.

Freshman Matt Johnson threw for 282 yards and three touchdowns as the 49ers jumped out to a 32-0 second quarter lead and never looked back.

Safety Mark Hogan got things rolling for the 49ers with a 32-yard interception return for the school's first ever touchdown on the second play from scrimmage.

Among the notables taking in the 49ers' historic afternoon included Richardson - the Carolina Panthers owner for whom the 49ers' stadium is named after - former Bank of America CEO Hugh McColl, former trustee Mac Everett and Gov. Pat McCrory.
