CFB AM: UF grad Billy Horschel gives Georgia fans the Gator Chomp

Was this past weekend perfect for Florida?

No, but it was pretty damn good.

First, the Gators escaped a crushing home defeat – and Will Muschamp avoided endless hot seat talk – by edging out Kentucky in triple overtime on Saturday.

On Sunday, one of their own had the best day of his career and then good-naturedly stuck it to Georgia fans.

Pro golfer Billy Horschel, a Florida grad, won the FedEx Cup and its $10 million bonus at East Lake. It was by far the biggest moment of Horschel’s career, and because golf fans are so nice, hundreds of presumably Georgia Bulldog fans – East Lake is located in Atlanta – showered him with love on the 18th green.

How did Horschel say thank you? By showing them the Gator Chomp and reminding them the rivalry never sleeps. Watch:

The only worse thing Horschel could have done Sunday, given Saturday’s events, was wear a South Carolina hat on the course.

Regardless, pretty nice effort Mr. Horschel. Although, if you want to talk leader in the clubhouse for all-time trolling Gator Chomps, this is still No. 1:

Nov. 1, UGA fans. That's your day to make Billy eat the chomp.

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

1. New AP Top 25 and Coaches polls came out yesterday, and there aren’t many surprises. In the AP Top 25, South Carolina jumped from 24 to 14 after beating Georgia, and USC fell from 9 to 17 after losing on the road at Boston College. One interesting team: There’s Michigan State lurking at No. 11. This is why I’m not completely on board with the “Big Ten was eliminated from the playoff after the Spartans lost to Oregon and Ohio State lost to Virginia Tech” talk.

We forget pretty quickly how much attrition occurs through the course of a college football season, and for 2014 specifically, have you seen anything to make you believe there will be numerous undefeated teams at the end of the year? I’d be surprised if there’s even one, given what we’ve seen so far.

Yes, Michigan State has a tougher road because of its league’s weaknesses, but the Spartans won’t be out of the discussion if their one loss is at Oregon. We’ll be talking about this in mid-October when they’re sitting at No. 5 after a few more upsets.

2. In the Kentucky-Florida game over the weekend, there was some dispute about whether the Gators got a fourth-and-seven play off before the play clock expired during the first overtime. They needed to convert a first down or score a touchdown to continue the game and avoid an embarrassing defeat at home to the Wildcats. Take a look at this photo and decide if the Gators got the snap off:

Now, you can’t see the football in this photo, so I suppose there’s a chance it’s off the ground and on its way to QB Jeff Driskel. The officials did not call delay of game here, and Driskel hit receiver Demarcus Robinson for a touchdown to tie the game. Of course, Florida would win in triple overtime. Because Kentucky asked the SEC to review the play, the league issued a statement Sunday and said it has no objections with the non-call.

3. We have a great Thursday night game this week, with No. 5 Auburn at No. 20 Kansas State. An important development to watch during the next couple days: Will the Tigers have wide receiver Sammy Coates back? He missed Auburn’s last game against San Jose State with an undisclosed injury to his left leg, but the Tigers had Week 3 off and offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee said, “We’re still very optimistic he’ll be ready to roll.” Auburn has plenty of weapons to make due without him, but at his best, Coates is one of the SEC’s top receiving threats.

THREE THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

1. Bruce Feldman’s Week 3 Big Picture column has a lot of great insight on Oklahoma, West Virginia, East Carolina, Tennessee, a Texas A&M freshman eyeing Jadeveon Clowney's record and other programs with some original reporting. If you have a few minutes, give it a read.

2. ASU coach Todd Graham said in a postgame radio interview that QB Taylor Kelly will “be perfectly fine.” On Sunday, there were multiple reports circling that Kelly will miss the UCLA game on Sept. 25 and his status beyond that is uncertain. Not that we’d ever be skeptical regarding a coach’s response to an injury question, but given Kelly left the game on crutches and in a walking boot, we’ll allow the MRI and any other subsequent medical tests to guide us here.

3. This is great: Virginia had a huge win over the weekend by knocking off Louisville – a win that does wonders for Mike London’s job status – and you can see some of that in London’s emotion here in the postgame locker room.

THREE THINGS YOU MAY WANT TO KNOW

1. Well, this is a lovely way to represent yourself, Kentucky fan.

2. If you missed it, East Carolina did something incredible on Saturday. The Pirates’ punt coverage unit played with ACTUAL hooks in place of their hands:

3. I … I don’t know, man. The Internet’s a weird place.

LASTLY

In Sunday’s CFB AM, we lead with a cool video of Rick Neuheisel watching his son Jerry lead UCLA’s comeback against Texas. It was an awesome father-son moment. Later, Rick got the chance to interview his son on the Pac-12 Network, and that’s worth a look, too.

Have a great Monday, all.
