Carson to assume starting role at RB for South Carolina
With running back Brandon Wilds potentially out with a bruised rib, it appears as if Shon Carson will get the starting nod over David Williams on Saturday versus UCF.
"Brandon has a bruised rib. Whether or not he plays I guess we'll find out Friday or Saturday," said head coach Steve Spurrier. "Shon Carson will probably start. We're not giving up on David. He has struggled, but he's a good back. We just can't get him going. Hopefully he gets in there and gets going this week."
Carson is the fastest of the three options in the South Carolina backfield. On the season, Carson has 118 yards rushing on 16 carries, which equates to a very good 7.4 yards-per-carry average. The thought is Carson can be a true home-run threat every time he touches the ball. He's also excellent in the return game, averaging 25.5 yards per kick return.
It's imperative for South Carolina to get its ground game revving at a high rate. Against an undermanned UCF team on Saturday, the Gamecocks should be able to run the ball well.
