Ka'Deem Carey, the nation's leading rusher last season, sat out Arizona's season opener against Northern Arizona on Friday night.

The school said Carey was not playing ''per team policy.''

The punishment apparently stems from the trouble Carey encountered in the offseason.

Carey was charged with misdemeanor assault and disorderly conduct for an incident last Dec. 26 involving his pregnant ex-girlfriend. He also was kicked out of an Arizona basketball game in late January in a run-in with arena staff and local police. The charges were dropped last summer and Carey has reconciled with his girlfriend, who gave birth to a boy.
