BYU football: Cougars will play Wyoming in Poinsettia Bowl

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The BYU football team’s opponent for the Poinsettia Bowl has been revealed. The Cougars will square off with the Wyoming Cowboys on Dec. 21 in San Diego.

The BYU football team accepted an invitation to the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl way back on Nov. 12. Nearly one month later, the Cougars finally know who they’ll be playing.

Wyoming was named to the Poinsettia Bowl today, after falling to the San Diego State Aztecs 27-24 in the Mountain West championship game.

The Cowboys are 8-5 on the season, having picked up wins over Boise State and San Diego State. But it hasn’t been all good for Wyoming this season. The Cowboys fell to UNLV on Nov. 12 69-66 and got shellacked twice this season. Once to Nebraska (52-17) on Nov. 12, and once to New Mexico (56-35) on Nov. 26. Wyoming also dropped a game to Eastern Michigan on Sept. 23.

BYU football head coach Kalani Sitake said in a press release that Wyoming is a “well coached team” and added that “Coach Bohl and the Cowboys have had an impressive season.”

Meanwhile the Cougars are likely asking about what might have been. Their four losses have come by a combined total of eight points, and they were just a handful of plays away from a 10-win season (or more).

BYU football and Wyoming have been playing since 1922, and the Poinsettia Bowl matchup marks the 78th all-time meeting between the two programs.

BYU currently leads the series 44-30-3. The last time these two schools met was in 2010, when BYU football picked up a 25-20 victory in Provo.

The game will be BYU’s second trip to the Poinsettia Bowl, the first coming in 2012. The Cougars toppled the San Diego State Aztecs 23-6 in that game and are looking to move to 2-0 in the Poinsettia Bowl.
