Briles: Lack of a brand name kept us out of the playoff

Baylor coach Art Briles told reporters at Big 12 Media Days in Dallas that "Brand names" kept the Bears out of last season's college football playoff.

OK, well, if that's the case, why wouldn't Briles force some change heading into 2015?

Baylor, as well as TCU, were passed over last season for the playoff, while Alabama, Oregon, Florida State and Ohio State got in.

Yes, Briles is partially right. The four schools that did get in do have some serious name recognition, which would lead one to believe the Bears need to do something about their brand, change things up. Do things differently.

Perhaps one such way is to beef up its schedule, instead of hurting its brand by playing a bunch no names. Instead Baylor is featuring SMU, Lamar and Rice as its non-conference opponents.

Last year, Baylor did go 11-1 in the regular season losing only at West Virginia. Ultimately, Baylor was undone by another weak non-conference schedule, beating SMU, Northwestern State and Buffalo.

There is one way for Baylor to make the playoff and not have to worry about what kind of name brand it is: Briles already provided that answer. Just win every game.

Seems easy enough.
