Bielema: Shannon not Arkansas' new defensive coordinator

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Arkansas coach Bret Bielema says former Miami head coach Randy Shannon will be promoted to associate head coach and won't be named the school's new defensive coordinator.

Shannon, who led the Hurricanes to a 28-22 record from 2007-10, served as the linebackers coach last season for the Razorbacks.

Speculation about Shannon's future with Arkansas had focused on the possibility of him taking over as defensive coordinator following Chris Ash's departure to Ohio State last month.

Bielema, however, says Shannon will remain as linebackers coach in addition to his new duties -- and that he expects to name a new defensive coordinator within the next week.

Shannon declined to say whether he was interested in moving to defensive coordinator.
