Auburn Football Recruiting: Wins Leading to Commits

The momentum Auburn football has amassed on the field isn’t staying put — it’s transferring over to recruiting, as well.

The Tigers landed a commitment from 2018 top-200 running back and speedster Shaun Shivers out of Chaminade–Madonna College Prep in Hollywood, Fla., just last week.

Today, they reeled in another.

After winning an on-field shootout with Ole Miss on Saturday night, Auburn out-dueled the Rebels — and others — for 2017 standout Kenney “K.J.” Britt (No. 117/Rivals) of unbeaten Oxford (Ala.) High.

Britt revealed his commitment in a most creative way:

Britt joins Birmingham’s Tadarian “T.D.” Moultry (No. 91/247Sports) and Chandler Wooten (No. 231/ESPN) out of Georgia’s North Cobb High in an extremely promising trio of linebackers headed to The Plains next season.

The four official finalists for Britt were Auburn, Ole Miss, Georgia, and Stanford. In fact, on the heels of an official visit to the Cardinal, Britt made an official to Oxford, Miss. just two days ago, taking in the Tigers’ victory over the Rebels in person.

During Britt’s recruitment, who had the perceived edged shifted back-and-forth, usually between Auburn and Georgia and usually following visits to the schools.

Measuring in at 6-foot and 230 pounds, Britt, an extremely hard hitter, is likely to play inside linebacker for the Tigers.

At a commitment ceremony at his school, Britt, appearing overwhelmed, had to take a minute to regain his composure.

His father, Kenney Sr., said he, himself, was a big Alabama fan, “but as of now, War Eagle.”

Britt, back in control of his emotions, would say: “This summer, I wanted to go to Georgia. I thought that was going to be the place for me, but I prayed and took my time.”

And a late visit to The Plains changed the game.

“I was really sold a couple weeks ago, when me and my family took a visit. It just hit me that Auburn was the place I needed to be.”

Many months ago, it was intimated — if not outright said — by both Britt and Moultry that the two were a “package deal.” This is often stated in recruiting, but rarely comes to fruition.

Luckily for the Tigers — and linebackers coach Travis Williams — this time, it did.
