Vikings upset
The Diablo Valley College football team put up plenty of offense but in the end it wasn't enough as Sacramento City handed the visiting Vikings their first loss of the season, 52-47, on Oct. 9. Joey Bradley completed 28 of 44 passes for 369 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions and Richard Calhoun added 88 yards rushing with two touchdowns. The loss dropped DVC to 4-1 on the season.

Broncos rolling
With 9-0 wins over Clayton Valley and Ygnacio Valley during the week of Oct. 4, Northgate High's tennis team continued to dominate in the DVAL. Kimiko Kearney, the Broncos' No. 1 singles player, dropped her first set against her Eagles opponent 2-6 on Oct. 7, but responded to win the next two by scores of 6-1, 6-1. Northgate is now 9-0 in the DVAL.

Eagles soaring
Halfway through the DVAL season, Berean Christian High's girls volleyball team looks in position to contend for its third straight DVAL title. The Eagles topped College Park 3-0 on Oct. 7 behind big games from Jessica Vestal and Brooke Fraser. That win improved the Eagles' record to 15-1 overall and 5-0 in the DVAL .In a 3-0 win over Mt. Diablo on Sept. 30, Cheyenne Boelk contribued 4 kills, 4 aces and 7 digs.

Berean Christian at Northgate, girls volleyball, Oct. 14, 6 p.m. -- The Eagles won a thrilling five-game match the first time these two teams met this year.
Monte Vista at De La Salle, football, Oct. 15, 7 p.m. -- The Mustangs bring their high-octane offense, led by WR Bryce McGovern, to Owen Owens Field searching for a win over the Spartans.
Clayton Valley at Concord, football, Oct. 15, 7 p.m. -- This year's edition of the "Claycord Cup" pits bitter rivals in a battle for city bragging rights.
Acalanes at Miramonte, boys water polo, Oct. 20, 6 p.m. -- This key DFAL contest is a rematch of last season's NCS title game, which the Matadors won 6-5.
Stars of the week
Jessica Vestal, Berean Christian girls volleyball -- The junior middle hitter had 14 kills, five blocks and two aces in a 25-15, 25-18, 25-16 win over College Park on Oct. 7.
Rus Williams, Northgate boys water polo -- Williams scored nine goals in the Broncos' 17-12 win over College Park on Oct. 6, keeping them undefeated in DVAL play.
Tanner Cullen, Acalanes boys water polo -- Cullen led the Dons with 11 goals at the S&R Cup tournament in Southern California Oct. 8-9. He had five goals in a 16-13 win over Sacred Heart Prep-Atherton to clinch seventh place.
Lucas Dunne, De La Salle football -- Dunne helped the Spartans notch a 56-0 win over host Amador Valley on Oct. 8, rushing for 111 yards and three touchdowns on just nine carries. He also caught two passes for 69 yards.
Jessica Goldstein, Miramonte girls golf -- Goldstein fired a 1-over 38 at the Orinda Country Club to lead the Matadors over Dublin 237-282 on Oct. 7.
Grant Jones, Ygnacio Valley football -- It would've been tough to do more than Jones did in a 36-28 win over visiting Casa Grande-Petaluma on Oct. 9. He excelled on offense, catching eight passes for 170 yards and four touchdowns. He also thrived on defense and special teams, intercepting a pass and blocking a punt.
Maggie Schoemann, College Park girls water polo -- Schoemann scored five goals to lead the host Falcons to an 8-5 win over Northgate on Oct. 6.
Alex Tate, Clayton Valley girls cross country -- Tate clocked the best time at the first DVAL Center Meet of the season, finishing the 3.0-mile Hidden Valley Park course in Martinez in 20 minutes, 1 second on Oct. 6.
