Toledo promoted offensive coordinator Jason Candle to head coach to replace Matt Campbell, who left to take over at Iowa State, a person involved in the decision told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because an official announcement and news conference was planned for 4:30 p.m. ET.

WTOL-TV in Toldeo first reported Candle would be the Rockets new coach.

The move by athletic director Mike O'Brien comes less than 72 hours after Campbell was announced as Iowa State's new head coach. The 36-year-old Candle was considering joining Campbell in Ames, Iowa.

Campbell already announced offensive line coach Tom Manning, cornerbacks coach D.K. McDonald, and director of high school relations John Kuceyeski will join him at Iowa State.

Candle has been at Toledo since 2009 and the offensive coordinator since 2012, when Campbell was promoted to coach of the Rockets.

Like Campbell, Candle is a Mount Union alum (2003). He was a receiver at the Division III powerhouse in Alliance, Ohio, and coached there before coming to Toledo.

The Rockets went 9-2 this season and averaged at least 440 yards per game with Candle as coordinator since 2012.

Toledo will find out Sunday what bowl game it will play.
