LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) Nebraska defensive backs coach Charlton Warren will leave the Cornhuskers to take a similar job at North Carolina, a person with knowledge of the hiring told The Associated Press on Friday.
Warren will replace cornerbacks coach Dan Disch, who was fired last week. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because North Carolina had not made an announcement.
New Nebraska coach Mike Riley said Warren told him he would be taking a job at another university, but Riley did not name the school. Warren was the only assistant Riley retained from Bo Pelini's staff.
''This is an opportunity that Charlton feels is right for him and his family, and I respect his decision,'' Riley said. ''We appreciate the valuable role Charlton has played in our transition to the University of Nebraska and wish him and his family nothing but the best. Charlton is an outstanding man and a bright, energetic football coach with a great future ahead of him in this profession.''
John Papuchis, Pelini's defensive coordinator at Nebraska, last month took an unspecified assistant's position under new North Carolina defensive coordinator Gene Chizik.
The departure of Warren is a blow for Riley. Warren, who was at Nebraska for one year, was considered the Huskers' best recruiter, and he has strong connections in the South.
''We will search for a talented teacher, coach and recruiter to fill the open position on our defensive staff,'' Riley said. ''This is a high priority, but we will take the necessary time to find the individual who is the right fit to help lead the young men in the University of Nebraska football program.''
The next defensive backs coach will be Nebraska's fifth in six seasons.
Warren came to Nebraska from Air Force, where he was an assistant for nine years. Warren was a defensive back for Air Force in the late 1990s, and his time with the Falcons coincided with when North Carolina coach Larry Fedora was an assistant there.
