Akron beats James Madison 35-33 in thriller
Quarterbacks Kyle Pohl and Nick Hirschman combined for four touchdowns, the defense stopped a final drive and Akron beat James Madison University 35-33 in a down-to-the-wire thriller on Saturday.
Pohl, who was 14 of 22 for 143 yards, threw scoring strikes to Zach D'Orazio and Jerrod Dillard. Hirschman was 6 of 10 for 144 yards, including a 68-yard hookup with Andrew Pratt. He also had a 1-yard TD run. Pratt had 188 yards on three receptions.
The Zips (1-1) overcame a strong performance by James Madison's Michael Birdsong, who hit 29 of 42 passes for 310 yards and three TDs. JMU had 503 yards of offense.
The Dukes (1-1) were threatening to score in the game's final seconds but the clock ran out after a Birdsong completion at the Akron 27.
James Madison's Dae'Quan Scott ran for 107 yards and a touchdown and had a receiving touchdown.
