With all the hype and circus surrounding Manny Pacquiao’s comeback following a brief retirement (that, frankly, no one ever took seriously), it’s easy to forget that he’s technically the challenger in the fight against WBO 147-pound titlist Jessie Vargas. Indeed, Pacquiao is the prohibitive favorite, and many are expecting him to produce his first stoppage since 2009.

While the ultimate aim of Manny Pacquiao’s comeback remains unclear, he will be under the microscope with a potential bout against Terence Crawford coveted by hardcore boxing fans. Of course, the specter of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and a second lucrative fight against “Money” looms large, but let’s not revisit that farce here.

As for Jessie Vargas, this is his moment. If Vargas is merely content to share the ring with Pacquiao and go the distance, he will get outclassed. But if he takes calculated risks and throws his right hand with conviction, he could surprise the majority of fans who find this match-up utterly underwhelming.
