NYSAC orders eye exam for Margarito

The New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) announced Friday that Antonio Margarito’s right eye, severely injured in his 2010 bout with Manny Pacquiao, must be examined by one of their doctors before the fighter is granted a license to compete in New York.

With Margarito’s December 3 bout against Miguel Cotto at Madison Square Garden just about two weeks away and Margarito currently training in Mexico, tentative plans are being made to hold the event in another state in case the commission mandate can’t be met in time.

While Top Rank is still hopeful that their fighter can get the medical clearance needed, they are also exploring a possible move to Dallas’ Cowboys Stadium as well as venues in Mississippi and New Jersey.

Margarito’s injuries, which included a broken right orbital bone and a cataract in the right eye resulting from the severe beating, were repaired last Spring. However, despite a green light from Margarito’s personal physician, the eye remained a cause for concern among NYSAC officials.
