Martin appeals decision to stop fight
An attorney for boxer Christy Martin claims sex discrimination was behind ring officials' decision to stop a June 4 bout in the final minute because of a broken right hand, handing the victory to opponent Dakota Stone.
Martin's appeal is being heard Monday by the California State Athletic Commission in Los Angeles.
Her attorney, Gloria Allred, claims that a fight involving a male boxer in similar circumstances would not have been stopped and that officials acted on a misguided notion of female lack of toughness or a greater need to protect female fighters.
Martin was winning on all three scorecards at Staples Center when the ring doctor stopped the fight.
The bout was Martin's return to the ring six months after being stabbed and shot, allegedly by her husband.
