Two years after he lost his first political bout, former heavyweight boxing contender Joe Mesi has joined the New York State Athletic Commission as an unpaid deputy commissioner.

Spokesman Gabe Roth says Commission Chairman Melvina Lathan has 10 deputy commissioners around the state. They attend matches and help officials ensure that boxers and promoters are paid and that safety rules and decorum are kept.

Mesi's first event will be Oct. 15 in Rochester.

He had a 36-0 record as a fighter and stopped fighting for two years because of bleeding in his brain. The New York commission refused to give him a new license.
