Having ruled the middleweight division for a long time, Canelo Alvarez will face Liam Smith at Cowboys Stadium for a shot at the junior middleweight crown.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin is the fight that everyone in the boxing world wants to see, but Golden Boy Promotions is trying to protect their fighter from that fate. During the negotiations process, Canelo has stated that making 160 pounds would be difficult for him. However, the two sides reached an agreement for the fight to happen at that weight, and Canelo usually weighs 180 pounds during his fights.

Golden Boy will call Canelo’s fight with Liam Smith a chance for him to conquer another weight class. But many boxing fans think it’s his way of running from GGG and the middleweight division. Whatever the reasoning behind it is, Canelo’s fight against Liam Smith marks his return to the junior middleweight division for the first time since 2013, when he lost to Floyd Mayweather.

This fight will be a real litmus test of Canelo’s drawing power. Despite being the junior middleweight champion, hardly anyone knows who Liam Smith is, and he’s a massive underdog to retain his belt. In addition to being on pay-per-view, this bout will also be at Cowboys Stadium, which is a venue many had hoped to see Canelo vs. Golovkin at. While many have promised to boycott this fight, Canelo remains a massive star. If he can bring in big pay-per-view numbers and a large attendance for a fight like this, there should be no denying his star power.

So with that in mind, here’s all the info you need to watch Canelo vs. Smith:

After Golovkin beat Kell Brook, he balked over calling out Canelo, stating he’d prefer to fight Billie Joe Saunders. If Canelo wins, we shall see if he takes a similar stance, or if he tries to egg the Kazakh on. The two seem destined to fight one another, but the only thing holding them back is the promoters.
