Former Duke Player Will Be Honored by Having Jersey Retired

Duke Women’s Basketball recently announced the program will retire the No. 1 jersey of former Blue Devil Elizabeth Williams later this season.

Duke Men’s Basketball head coach Mike Krzyzewski says there is no higher honor for the Blue Devils than having your basketball jersey and number retired. The women’s basketball program recently announced that a former player will be receiving that honor, with the jersey of former center Elizabeth Williams joining the Duke legends in the rafters of Cameron Indoor Stadium this season.

Williams had a dominant career with the Blue Devils averaging 14.4 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks per game. She is the first player in conference history to record at least 1,900 points, 1,000 rebounds, and 400 blocks and be named a four-time AP All-American. The 6-3 center earned ACC Defensive Player of the Year every year at Duke and was named the 2015 National Defensive Player of the Year. She will only be the third women’s basketball player to have her jersey hung in the rafters of Cameron Indoor Stadium, joining Alana Beard and Lindsey Harding. She had this to say about being honored by the Duke Women’s Basketball program:

“For me to sit here and say that my jersey is going to be retired is so surreal. It’s really difficult to put into words what it will mean to have my jersey hanging in the rafters among Duke basketball legends. The credit goes to every single teammate, staff member and coach that I encountered in my four year career. This may be a basketball achievement, but its meaning extends far beyond the lines of a court. From the nine-year old awkward basketball player to the young woman in her second year of professional basketball, I thank any and every one that made my dreams possible and led me to this moment.”

Williams will be honored by the Blue Devils during a halftime ceremony on December 29th when Duke faces Kentucky. Congrats to Elizabeth Williams on getting her No. 1 jersey retired and it’s much-deserved after a historic career with Duke Women’s Basketball.
