The main reasons why Bray Wyatt and Randy Orton should defeat Heath Slater and Rhyno for the SmackDown Tag Team Championships at WWE TLC 2016.

WWE TLC 2016 might be a brand-specific event for SmackDown Live, but it is certainly shaping up to have an entertaining match card. One match that might be poised for biggest surprise could be for the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championships. That’s because the team of Bray Wyatt and Randy Orton earned themselves a shot at the tag titles at the TLC event this Sunday.

Since Wyatt defeated Orton in October’s No Mercy event, the Viper made the shocking decision to join the Wyatt Family. In this interesting development, the two were the lone survivors from SmackDown’s big win in the five-on-five match with Raw in November’s Survivor Series. The duo then challenged American Alpha for the rights to face Heath Slater and Rhyno at TLC on Sunday.

In an entertaining main event, Wyatt and Orton got the win and the shot at the Smackdown Tag Team Championship. What makes this match on the TLC card so intriguing is that there is a cult following on both sides of the ring. The WWE Universe cheered Slater on during his push to get a WWE contract after being snubbed at the WWE Draft. Wyatt has the unique persona that has attracted “fireflies” at WWE events.

While some might feel it’s better for tag team wrestling to have an actual team hold the championship, a number of great teams have come from singles superstars forming powerful duos. It’s a little early to tell, but Wyatt and Orton certainly have the potential to be as great as championship teams like The Rock and Mankind.

3. Heath Slater Can Start Another Cinderella Run

Ever since Heath Slater went undrafted in the WWE Draft earlier this summer, he’s become an underdog hero with the fans. People enjoy rooting for the little guy and Slater was continuously trying to earn his spot on either Raw or SmackDown. It was a fun story to watch as he was willing to try and get in the ring with Beasts, Vipers and anything else thrown his way.

The fans sympathized with Slater and it worked out as he finally found a tag team partner to enter the SmackDown Tag Team Championship tournament. In an effort to finally move his wife and kids into that doublewide, he teamed with WWE veteran Rhyno for an improbable run to the titles. Consider this WWE’s version of the movie Rudy. Maybe more like Little Giants.

Either way, all stories like this have to end at some point. The team of Slater and Rhyno could still continue as they try to fight Bray Wyatt and Randy Orton to reclaim the championship after WWE TLC. But maybe the WWE has other plans in mind for Slater after dropping the titles at TLC.

That doesn’t mean Slater should get a run towards the WWE World Championship. That would be just silly. However, he could always be a candidate to feud with the Miz for the WWE Intercontinental Championship.

    2. Wyatt Finally Gets a Championship

While Bray Wyatt’s character may not require championship gold to get over, winning a title is still an accomplishment one would have expected by now. Wyatt has been with the WWE for a few years now, dating back to his days as Husky Harris in the second season of NXT. But the transformation into the Eater of Worlds has earned him the biggest push yet.

Unfortunately, that push has led to a number of missed opportunities. How often has there been concern with Wyatt not getting the big win in a main event feud? He’s never won a championship while on the main roster. And yet Wyatt is probably one of the most over superstars on the SmackDown Live roster.

However, it seems like the WWE officials are turning around Wyatt’s fortunes. He earned a big rivalry win over Randy Orton, who has since joined the family. Wyatt is someone who could really do well with a championship on him. His character seems like someone who wants to take over the WWE Universe.

Winning titles is a good way to build yourself up to take over. Given Wyatt’s ability to cut promos and tying things together, it wouldn’t be a surprise to the WWE go in that direction for the Eater of Worlds. It begins with defeating Heath Slater and Rhyno at WWE TLC.

    1. A True Heel Team Rules the Division

While it’s been refreshing to see a bigger emphasis put on tag team wrestling in the WWE, it feels like something is missing. It’s certainly not a talent issue with a number of diverse teams on both Raw and SmackDown. The blue brand, specifically, has quite the collection of teams that range from athletic jocks to the fashion police.

There are good guys and some who try to come across as bad guys, there hasn’t been a true heel team in the division. At least not one that has ruled with any kind of Tag Team gold, I mean bronze. No, silver?

Whatever the color, there hasn’t been a villainous tag team to rule the WWE’s tag team division. It’s worth noting that Bray Wyatt and Randy Orton each have quite the dedicated following amongst the WWE Universe. But they are probably more likely to be viewed as the most evil tag team. Our apologies to the Vaudevillains and the Ascension.

Sometimes, it’s better to have the bad guys hold the championship while a face team chases. American Alpha could be that team that chases the Wyatt Family with a feud that culminates at WrestleMania 33. The live crowd at Orlando will certainly provide a large pop for Jason Jordan and Chad Gable.
