WWE Raw: Explaining the Bill Simmons Reference by New Day

This past Monday on WWE Raw, the New Day made a quick mention of HBO’s Bill Simmons as they walked to the ring. Just what was that about?
The New Day are known for adding pop culture references into their promos and this week’s WWE Raw was no different. As they headed down to the ring, they posed the question, “Do you know who wants to see Sheamus?”. After the obligatory “Who! Who! Who!” catchphrase concluded, Big E quickly quipped, “Not Bill Simmons”. This was a reference to a brief Twitter exchange between Simmons and Sheamus.
To which Sheamus replied…
Tru dat. Never a close match when I mangle some poor mutt… Still, Cole could help sell your flagging HBO show & p*ss-poor promo skills? https://t.co/mcQIaNkdQG

Now it’s well known that Simmons is a fan of WWE. He often references wrestling on his podcasts and even produces The Masked Man Show, a weekly wrestling podcast on Simmons’ The RInger Podcast Network. Not to mention the US title is prominently featured during the opening credits of his show Any Given Wednesday With Bill Simmons. So a wrestling analogy comparing a bad football game to a Sheamus match is right up his alley. But apparently, Sheamus didn’t find any humor in the analogy. Or rather maybe the Celtic Warrior is just heeling it up on social media. It’s also possible that Sheamus is jealous that Simmons drew more heat at Wrestlemania 32 than he has in his entire career.
Whatever the case may be, kudos to New Day for having some fun with it on Raw. We can always count on those three to stir the pot. However, it should be Sheamus looking to push this angle with Simmons a little further. Let’s be honest, this tweet is probably the most interesting thing he produced in the past year. Is it time for a Sheamus and Simmons showdown at Wrestlemania 33? Highly unlikely, but an appearance by Sheamus on one of Simmons shows wouldn’t be out of the question. We all know Sheamus could use the rub.
